As we have learned in the readings and materials in Info-269, Early Childhood Literacy, it is important for children to start acquiring early literacy skills from a young age. Libraries are well positioned to help teach these skills to children and their parents/caregivers. By offering programs that follow the early literacy concepts outlined in the textbook Storytimes for Everyone! Developing Young Children’s Language and Literacy (2013) by Ghoting and Martin-Diaz, librarians can offer programs that will not only help young children acquire these skills but instruct parents and caregivers how to reinforce them at home.
In my Early Literacy Plan presented in this blog, I hope to have created programs that are fun and engaging while also teaching early literacy skills to young children and their caregivers. Since play is an important factor in early childhood literacy, I incorporated free play time into most programs. Currently, at the Upper Saddle River Library, (where this program was created for), due to Covid concerns and staffing shortages, few storytimes are offered. Hopefully, when life returns to “normal,” some of these programs can be included in the schedule.
