Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, Twenty minute time slots will be available.
Children can sign up for a 20 minute time slot to read to a trained volunteer. Volunteers will be senior citizens or high school students who are members of the National Honor Society. The children will select their own reading material. The children will be assigned to the same volunteer each week so they can build a rapport with each other. Along with reading, volunteers will ask the children questions, predict the outcomes of the stories, play games, and draw pictures.
According to Jalongo (2015), volunteers “can exert a powerful and positive effect on children’s reading.” Reading to a volunteer can help children maintain focus and build vocabulary.
Staffing: The Young Adult Librarian will coordinate, schedule, and supervise the volunteers for this program.
