Early literacy training for parents and caregivers will be presented in January, June, and September. More classes will be added if needed. Handouts explaining the importance of early literacy and adult involvement will be distributed, along with a list of recommended book titles. Information about the program 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten will also be distributed. A PowerPoint presentation will be used explaining the five practices to introduce early literacy skills (Ghoting, 2013):
- singing
- talking
- reading
- writing
- playing,
and the five early literacy components (Ghoting, 2013):
- Phonological awareness
- Print convention and awareness
- Letter knowledge
- Vocabulary
- Background knowledge
The Children’s Librarian will briefly demonstrate part of an enhanced storytime, explaining the three types of tips or asides: explain, example, and empower. A question and answer period will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be served.
